Why you shouldn’t just “go it alone” in business

You’ve likely heard the phrase, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Surround yourself with inspiring people and you are more likely to push yourself to rise to that level. Makes sense.

In today’s digital world, you don’t have to physically be spending time with the people in your circle of influence. Most of the time, mine are in my headphones or my inbox. Sometimes the amount of time I spend with any of them on a given day is enough to warrant a restraining order!

Let’s be honest though, thought leaders create content with the intention of serving more people, and for that I am grateful.

These are my top five influencers that serve me inspiration, strategies and tools to be better in business and life in general. Check them out – these are my people:

  1. Rachel Hollis – Her candid wit makes her fun to listen to or read. Check out her podcast: Rise, or either of her New York Times’ Bestselling books: Girl, Wash your face or Girl, stop apologizing. I loved them both!
  2. Brendon Burchard – This man is really serving the world with researched methods of how to be better through his High Performance Institute. I recently attended one of his seminars and it was truly life-changing. I am now a Brendon student for LIFE as I’m enthralled with his online marketing techniques and proven success. Check out his podcast: The Brendon Show.
  3. Amy Porterfield – The Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast was probably the first one I started listening to regularly. Thanks, Amy for sparking my addiction to podcasts and the lifelong learning journey that represents. Her episodes are often detailed explanations of how to tackle any number of online marketing challenges. So good!
  4. Marie Forleo – Oh Marie! If you’re looking for savvy business advice from an experienced pro, look no further than Marie Forleo. She would probably offer some super cool dance moves to go with that rhyme I just made. I have gone through her program B-School, and listen to her regularly on Marie TV.
  5. Jenna Kutcher – A small town photographer who mastered Instagram, Jenna shares great tips on using social media in business. She’s down-to-earth and shows herself so authentically, so I can’t help but admire her. Find her online or listen to her Goal Digger podcast.

All of these wonderful humans produce enough free content to distract you from what you should actually be doing, so be careful!

The point of this post is to remind you that you’re not alone when it comes to navigating through life as an entrepreneur, so find some role models and learn from their stories. Too often it seems we feel like we need to wade through it all on our own, because then we can one day proudly say, “look what I did!” Well, I believe that’s just stubborn pride. You’re still in charge of your journey, but isn’t it better to have others to show you the way?

“The time to get the map is before your enter the forest.”
